Executive Summary Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)

hljsouthAs college students return for the 2023 fall semester, upperclassmen already know that certain holidays are on their way. Labor Day Weekend in September, Columbus Day or Fall Break in October, Thanksgiving in November, Christmas Break in December, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January, Presidents Day Weekend in February, and of course, Spring Break in March.

Spring Break in March 2024

The annual trek to the sun, fun, and celebration of freedom is a rite of passage into the world of responsibility and opportunity. Freshmen along with students who have yet to enjoy spring break have no idea of the adventure that awaits.

There is an underserved segment of the collegiate student population when it comes to spring break. The African American student population has traveled to South Miami Beach, Atlanta for the outrageous Freak Nik, and Virginia Beach in the past.

Statement of Need

Cultural Tourism for many college students sets a tone and vibration for expectations as young professionals. Annually college students travel to Miami, Florida for spring break. Up until this time, African American college students have not received the best hospitality and tourism experience in Miami, Florida. Due to a lack of coordination and organization, many students end up inebriated and frustrated with their hospitality and tourism experience. In recent years, bad news has come out of Miami, Florida during spring break. Non-college students have intermingled with college students with combustible results. There is a fourfold need for a Beautiful Black College Spring Break Experience. There is a need:

  1. to distinguish the actual college students from the non-college students.
  2. for safe organized fun activities that capture the imagination of college students.
  3. for community engagement to provide cover and support to students while in Miami.
  4. for effective communication and marketing to the college leadership and students.

Solution Offering

The Black College Spring Break Weekend is a targeted Pre-Professional Development Spring Break Experience developed by university professors, and alumni. The intention of the spring break week is to provide a safe, structured, purposeful fun-filled experience to targeted students. To that end, the National Student Clearing House validates that attendees are actually registered college students in good academic standing at their respective higher educational institutions.
